Da Nang surfing at a glance
Can you surf in Da Nang?
Yes. My Khe Beach is a good place to start. Da Nang usually gets its most consistent waves from November through March. If you’re new to surfing, keep your dates flexible so you can pick a day with smaller waves.
When to go
The main surf season runs from November through March. The first seasonal swells can arrive in September and October. Summer waves are less consistent.
Where to look
Start along My Khe Beach. Waves break over sandbanks that shift after storms, so the best peaks move. Our map shows 9 surf zones to explore.

When is the best time to surf in Da Nang?
November through March offers the most consistent surf. Seasonal swells can start in September or October and continue into spring. Summer is less reliable, so allow more flexibility if surfing is a priority for your trip.
| Period | Typical pattern | For beginners | For independent surfers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sep–Oct | Seasonal swells begin arriving. Small days can alternate with larger, windier conditions. | Lessons are possible on smaller days, with the time and beach section chosen for your level. | More opportunities to surf as the season starts, with changing swell and wind. |
| Nov–Mar | The main surf season, with the most regular waves and occasional powerful, stormy days. | There are opportunities to learn, but larger days may require moving or postponing a lesson. | The best period to plan a trip around regular surfing, with a board suited to the expected wave size. |
| Apr–May | A transition toward summer. Smaller days become more common, although strong swells can still arrive. | Smaller waves can work well for practice. Leave room to adjust the lesson date. | Keep watching the forecast for stronger swells. A higher-volume board helps on smaller days. |
| Jun–Aug | Often small or flat, interrupted by occasional swells. | Small-wave lessons are possible when there is enough whitewater to practise catching waves. | Keep your plans flexible. Longboards and higher-volume boards make more of the smaller surf. |

Where to surf in Da Nang
Start along My Khe Beach. Its sandy beach breaks offer different peaks along the coast, and storms can reshape the sandbanks.
Our map covers 9 surf zones, from Furama South to Mân Thái, with notes on access and what to look for. Use it to choose a few sections to check, rather than heading to one pin and expecting the same wave every time.
If the waves close out across one section, look along the beach for a peak with an open shoulder.

Reading the waves
What are the waves like in Da Nang?
Wave shape matters as much as size. Along these sandy beach breaks, nearby sections can offer very different rides.
Gentle whitewater
The broken wave rolls toward shore as foam. Small, even lines give beginners room to practise catching waves and standing up.
A peak with an open shoulder
The wave starts breaking at a peak and peels to one side, leaving an unbroken face to ride along.
Closeouts
Most of the wave breaks at once. It may look impressive from shore but leave little room to ride along the face.
Waves on an outer sandbank
A second line of waves breaks farther offshore. Watch whether those waves peel or close out before assuming they offer a longer ride.
Follow one wave from the moment it breaks. Does an open face remain, or does the whole line collapse? Compare a few sets to see whether the pattern repeats.
Before you paddle out
A few local checks before entering the water
Small waves don’t tell the whole story. Take a moment to check what is happening on the beach as well as in the water.
Flags & warnings
Follow posted signs and lifeguard instructions. Stay out when access to the water is prohibited or a thunderstorm is approaching.
Swimming zones & obstacles
Surf outside marked swimming zones. Keep clear of ropes, buoys and fishing nets, allowing room for waves and sideways drift.
After heavy rain
Runoff can affect water quality beyond a visible outflow. Avoid drains and polluted water, and follow local water-quality warnings.
Choose an exit point
Find a clear place to return to shore, away from swimmers, ropes and hard obstacles. Leave the water if you cannot keep your position.
Know where you can get in and back out. A calm-looking gap in the breaking waves may be a rip current.
Keep checking your position. Use a fixed landmark to notice sideways drift. If a current carries you offshore, stay with your board, signal for help and avoid exhausting yourself paddling against it.
